Magnetic and Magneto-optic garnet materials (thin films)
We have expertise in Magnetic and Magneto-optic garnet materials (thin films) by Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE) and HTSC films by PLD technique. Garnets are suitable for many magnetic/magneto-optic devices and interesting class of materials as their properties can be easily tailored by substitution of different ions at different sites.
       * We have been involved in past years for developing substituted garnet material thin films suitable for optical devices and have optimized the properties to get the best results.
       * Recent involvement has been to obtain garnet films suitable for MO devices by other cheaper methods like sol gel method on glass substrates.
We plan to make different Rare Earth substituted films on larger surfaces of variety of substrates by other cheaper techniques like sol gel method and other methods.
Silicon on Insulator (SOI) is an attractive substrate for dense integrated optical circuits because of its high index contrast, which allows small, high performance components such as wav guides, splitters, modulators etc.
Recently there have been reports of thin Si wave guide being fabricated onto a SOI wafer and epitaxially rare earth substituted garnet films grown on gadoliniun gallium garnet (GGG) substrate then being bonded to Si wave guide by using a direct wafer bonding technique. We plan to do research in miniaturizing integrated devices by directly bonding SOI wave guides and nano particle magneto-optic garnet films. The use of standard semiconductor substrate would simplify the material design for large scale photonic integrated circuits.
